CU Difference: 2026 Annual Meeting

Mazuma
by Mazuma

As a credit union, we are a proudly Member-owned institution! Our Members are given the opportunity to share their feedback with us year-round, but once a year we host an Annual Meeting at which Members can learn about their credit union’s growth, community support, and ongoing initiatives.

Annual Meeting Recap

This year’s Annual Meeting (our 77th!) was held in the Community Room at our Headquarters in Overland Park on Tuesday, April 28th with a quorum of Members present.

Following a welcome and call to order from Board President Russ Petry, Board Treasurer John Lathrop presented the Treasurer’s Report. He shared that Mazuma Credit Union posted strong earnings, and our overall financial position remains strong as we conclude 2025. Our total assets continue to grow and now exceed $1 billion. These results, and our commitment to our Members, allow Mazuma to continue to execute our purpose of Making Kansas City a Better Place to Live, Work, and Bank.”

Then, Mazuma President & CEO Deonne Christensen shared highlights from the 2025 Annual Report, noting that “2025 marked an extraordinary year for Mazuma Credit Union - one defined by resilience, progress, and meaningful impact. In an environment shaped by continued volatility, economic pressure, and rapid change across financial, regulatory, and global landscapes, your Credit Union not only remained strong, but thrived. These results reflect the power of the credit union difference and the unwavering commitment of our Team to serve our Members and our community with care, integrity, and purpose.”

Community Partner Testimonies

Christensen then introduced a few special guests who spoke about Mazuma’s impact on their organizations and the broader Kansas City community.

Paige Peterson, Director of Corporate Partners for Big Brothers Big Sisters Kansas City, which provides mentorship services for young people, shared that “you (Mazuma) don’t just write a check – you go above and beyond, supporting our events, providing the Mazuma BBQ truck, and sponsoring the gifts for our Littles at our end of year party.” Peterson noted that BBBS had been able to match 15 Littles with Bigs during 2025 specifically due to Mazuma’s investment.

Next, Janet Baker, Executive Director of KC Shepherd’s Center, which serves and empowers seniors, spoke about the nonprofit’s search for a banking partner, saying that “when you meet Mazuma’s executive team and feel their energy and passion and genuineness, you know you’re in the right place.”

The Victory Project’s Senior Director of Community Impact, Chioma Atanmo, enthused that “I really appreciate the warmth of the Mazuma Team and the many different resources you provide for nonprofits in Kansas City.” The Victory Project, the nonprofit arm of Sporting Kansas City, enhances the lives of children with cancer and creates inclusive opportunities for youth with disabilities or limited financial resources.

Corey Mohn, President and Executive Director of the CAPS Network, spoke about the annual CU Disrupt event in partnership with Mazuma, saying that “our partnership showcases what can happen when you meet a partner who is truly a positive force in the community.” CAPS prepares students in KC and across the globe to make a positive impact through profession-based learning experiences.

And finally, longtime Community Partner Reconciliation Services, with whom Mazuma is developing a new branch location at 31st and Troost in 2026, was represented by Senior Philanthropy Advisor Sara Bland, who said that “partners like Mazuma are the lifeblood of our work.” Reconciliation Services strategically addresses community needs through a variety of programs that promote dignity and foster healthy communities.

Board Affirmation & Closing Remarks

The meeting continued with the affirmation of three Board Members – Ike Nwabuonwu, Rena Katina Frymyer, and Clifton Carney – and an acknowledgement of the vital contributions made by Mazuma’s volunteer Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee members.

In closing, Board President Russ Petry shared stories of Member impact from the past year – moments when Mazuma was able to go above and beyond to help a Member close a loan, avoid fraud, or just feel seen, heard, and special. “Mazuma did that,” Petry noted, because of our commitment to “people helping people.”
