How to write a
check
When writing a check,
be sure to fill out each line legibly. The memo line
can be used for noting what the check is for. Always
remember to record your checks in your checkbook register
so you can accurately balance your checkbook.
Certain information about
you is always pre-printed on your checks. This includes:
- Your Name
- Your Address
- Check Number
- Account Number
- Routing Number
- Financial Institution
Optional information may
also be pre-printed on your checks, including:
- Your Telephone Number
- Your Date of Birth
- Your Driver's License
Number
You will need to fill
in the remaining information, including:
- The date of the check
- Who the check is to
- The check amount spelled
out in letters (show cents as a fraction of 100)
For Example: Fifty-Seven and 50/100
Begin writing at the far left side of the check and
fill un-used area after the amount with a line. This
will prevent someone from adding anything to the beginning
or end of the amount.
- The check amount written
in numbers
For example: $57.50 (be sure that the two amount
areas agree)
- The memo line (a good
place to note what was purchased)
- Your signature
